On February 11, 2025, the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) came into force. Its aim: less waste, more recycling and a significant boost for the circular economy. In contrast to previous directives, it applies directly in all member states - uniformly, bindingly and without national differences.
For many companies, this initially brings uncertainty: Which packaging will still be permitted in the future? What requirements will apply from when? And does this also affect reusable containers?
The good news for our customers: We keep an eye on the PPWR and support you in mastering the new requirements.
Uniform rules for Europe
The new regulation focuses on Sustainable packaging. In future, they will be more strictly regulated with clear reduction targets and mandatory quotas.
The most important key points:
- Reduction of packaging waste: -5 % until 2030, -15 % until 2040
- Recycling rates: 70 % of all packaging should be recycled by 2030 (for plastics at least 55 %)
- Recyclability: From 2030, all packaging must be designed in such a way that it is recyclable
- Ban on certain disposable itemsIndividual products such as certain plastic packaging, service packaging or non-recyclable cardboard packaging are gradually being banned
- Promotion of reusable packaging: Reusable systems are explicitly supported
The PPWR is designed to have a long-term impact and gradually brings with it new requirements. We keep an eye on these developments for our customers, support them during implementation and ensure that they are always optimally positioned.
Why reusable is the future
The direction is clear: Disposable is restricted, reusable wins. The PPWR thus confirms a path that we at SSI SCHAEFER Plastics have been following for a long time.
Our reusable plastic containers offer a wide range of applications in storage, transportation and production:
- Durable and stable in daily use
- Cost-efficientas they can be used multiple times
- Sustainablebecause they are recycled at the end of their life cycle and the recyclable material remains in the cycle
This means that companies that rely on reusable packaging are not only better positioned ecologically, but also have an economic advantage - and are already optimally prepared today for the requirements of tomorrow.
With SSI SCHAEFER Plastics, you have a partner at your side who offers you solutions that are not only legally compliant, but also future-proof.
